In the old days in Ireland I had seen the old reliable twin tub washing machine. Well there is one living with me, and it does wash and spin. I am nearly afraid to let it wash for too long, my clothes may not resist the determined washing and spinning. Finding a way to put hot water into the tub without spending half the day filling buckets took a bit of thinking. Well until further improvement, while taking my shower I fill in the basin and empty it into the tub. Yes it means a stop during my shower but I have hot water within the same time. The idea of filling buckets really annoys me. If you have other ideas out of putting a hose from the tap feel free to tell me. A hose cannot be fitted unless I buy tools to do some plumbing, later on, later on….

Dans le temps quand j’habitais en Irlande j’ai eu l’occasion de croiser la bonne vieille machine à laver à deux tambours. C’est ma colocataire et elle lave et essore pour de vrai. J’ai presque peur de la laisser laver trop longtemps, ma garde-robe risque de ne pas survivre à son enthousiasme. Il m’a fallut trouver un système pour avoir de l’eau chaude sans passer la journée à remplir des seaux. Donc jusqu’à la prochaine idée lumineuse, le remplissage de la bassine est concomitante à la douche. Ok je fais une pause pendant la douche mais j’ai de l’eau chaude à verser dans le tambour sans poireauter à côté. Si vous avez des idées hormis mettre un tuyau je suis preneuse. Le tuyau veut dire outil et plomberie, plus tard, plus tard.

Time here has another meaning than in Europe, this is not a scoop, we all know that. Adapting your biological clock to a totally, and I mean totally different one can be a bit hard for people like me. The “up with the birds” type finds oneself quite alone in the early morning, so far ok. Where it gets a bit more complicated is that business is done from 7 pm or there about and until all hours at night. Two days of this led to a 12 h sleep for a pretty confused individual ie: me, me up until 1.30 am…. Would you believe it….!!!
To be honest I went for a nap, one hour or two max, well I never got up again, just “zombied” to remove my eyes and straight back in again. Even the Mosque call didn’t disturb me and it is loud enough for anyone to hear.

Le temps ici est un concept très différent de celui de l’Europe, c’est pas un scoop, nous le savons tous, là où ça devient sportif c’est l’adaptation de l’horloge biologique à une autre tellement à l’opposée. Les lève-tôts se sentent un peu seuls le matin, en soit pas très grave, la complication vient du fait que tout se traite à partir de 19h environ et jusqu’à des heures totalement indues. Deux jours de ce régime et c’est 12 heures de sommeil pour une mamie en vrac. Etre debout jusqu’à 1h30 du mat….. si si c’est vrai !!!
Pour être honnête je suis aller faire une sieste qui s’est un peu prolongée, j’ai réussie à enlever mes yeux en pilotage automatique et retour case départ. Même l’appel de la mosquée n’a pas réussie à me réveiller et pourtant on l’entend bien.

MOVING IN

Here it is, I am in my walls and the flat is furnished which means just the luggage had to be moved in. Apart from the traditional floor rag and cleaning products everything is in.
Moving in meant really checking that water was running out of the tap, which it was not :
Two reason for this, first the water is held in a tank for the whole building and refilled 3 times a week. If as I did you arrive before the water truck has been in, well you hope the truck will come soon. So always have a supply of water at the ready in case of shortage. The previous tenant had done so and we used it to clean the floor and refilled the large bottle for future use.
Second the stop tap is headless so we had to find someone with the tools, flooding is part of the fun, it cleans the floor…

Et voilà, je suis dans mes murs et comme l’appartement est meublé, le déménagement a pris 10 minutes. A part l’achat d’une serpillière et quelques produits d’entretien tout y est.
Emménager veut surtout dire vérifier que tout fonctionne, que l’eau sort du robinet, ce qui n’était pas le cas. 2 raisons à ceci
La première, l’eau est retenue dans un réservoir pour tout l’immeuble, et rempli 3 fois par semaine, si vous arrivez avant le camion et après la coupure d’eau, il faut juste espérer que le camion citerne va arriver vite. Moralité avoir toujours une réserve d’eau, ce que le précédent locataire avait et que nous avons utilisé pour un début de nettoyage et le bidon trône sous l’évier re-rempli dès que l’eau est sortie du robinet.
Second le robinet d’arrêt d’eau n’a plus de tête et il a fallut trouver quelqu’un pour ouvrir l’eau… Inondation garantie, lavage à grande eau….

As construction is booming around I had noticed these rectangular openings on brand new flats and could not figure out what they were for. Well I know now as I have also 2 of those. The third one being filled with its legitimate occupant the air conditioning unit (not working). For the first 2 it is still at project stage. So sometimes it is blocked by cardboard, other left wide open. And it is the favorite entrance of mosquitoes…. But like Mc Guyver I have my mesh netting to keep them out, well can’t I dream….

Le bâtiment est en plein boom et depuis quelque temps je me demandais pourquoi il y avait des ouvertures rectangulaires dans les murs d’appartement tout neuf. Maintenant je sais car j’en ai deux aussi. La troisième est le logement de son locataire la clim, qui ne marche pas. Les deux autres ouvertures sont des projets de clim et l’entrée favorite des moustiques malgré un morceau de carton qui tant bien que mal ferme l’ouverture. J’ai pas été scout mais j’ai avec moi des moustiquaires et j’ai l’illusion de garder les sticmouzes hors de ma chambre…

So then we thought maybe food for lunch would be a nice idea as without water cleaning is quite quickly done. And here no gas, the bottle is empty…. Yes so, thanks to one of the young guy and to the fact that he couldn’t find bread anywhere I tasted the local Mc DO, which is called KOCHARY. If you imagined meat between 2 slices of bread of some definition, well try again. This come into a tub and is a mix of different pasta, small, large, narrow, flat, with a handful of onions and some tomato sauce and chick peas and rice thrown in for good measure. Well I had the last of it for breakfast. Once you have a full tub of this, personally I am fed not for the week but for the main part of the day.

Plus tard l’idée nous est venue que de manger sera une option intéressante vu que le ménage sans eau ça va très vite. Et là pas de gaz, ok donc plan B. Heureusement que l’un des jeunes qui m’ont aidé a eu l’idée du Mc DO local ou KOCHARY car il ne trouvait pas de pain, fermé… Oubliez la viande dans deux tranches de pain, cherchez encore…. Cela vous est fournit dans un pot en plastique et est un mélange de nouilles de toutes sortes en forme et taille avec une cuillère d’oignon frits avec de la sauce tomate des poix chiches et du riz pour compléter. J’ai terminé mon pot ce matin au petit déjeuner. Personnellement un pot me nourrit pas pour la semaine mais pour une grosse partie de la journée. Ca tient au corps.

I don’t know if it is the same as a whole in Egypt but the sitting room or reception room is the only room without windows. 2 options, is it to keep the heat out of the living area, or to protect from outside looking in. I would tend to think a bit of both. I was told that people seldom enter each others home, men meet outside that I had noticed, but women do they meet or do they stay indoor with their family and the TV for company ? for the moment I have no answer.

Je ne sais pas si cela est valable pour toute l’Egypte mais le salon salle à manger est la seule pièce sans fenêtre. 2 options, soit c’est pour limiter la chaleur dans la pièce principale ou pour éviter le regard extérieur. J’aurais tendance à penser que c’est un peu les deux. On m’a dit que les gens ne se reçoivent guère chez eux, les hommes se rencontrent à l’extérieure, ça j’avais remarquer, mais les femmes se rencontrent elles ou ont elles pour seule compagnie la vie de famille et la télé ? pour l’instant aucune réponse.

And the last bit for this post. I even have a TV, a well known piece of equipment that come with a satellite receiver and is even working…. So enrolling help I located the children channel in Egyptian Arabic and the news channels and I shall do what I have been advocating for years, listen to it in the back ground so to learn the lingo. I was told they will give me a new one, why no idea, I just hope it is not too big…. But today I am enjoying the fact that I have electricity and I am listening to music, if it doesn’t fail…. This reminds me to buy some candles as failures tend to happen. The main power supply comes from town generators and like all generators well sometime they suffer a bout of bad health and you are in the dark.

Un dernier morceau pour ce post, j’ai même la télévision, cet élément si célèbre et indispensable vient avec un décodeur satellite et elle marche… Avec un peu d’aide j’avoue, j’ai localisé la chaine enfant en arabe égyptien ainsi que les infos et je vais faire ce que je dis depuis des années, je vais la mettre en fond sonore pour apprendre la langue, il paraît que je vais même en avoir une neuve, pourquoi aucune idée, j’espère seulement qu’elle n’est pas trop grosse ? donc aujourd’hui je profite d’avoir de l’électricité et j’écoute de la musique si on a pas de panne. Faut que je pense à acheter des bougies parce que les pannes elles sont fréquentes. L’électricité est fournit par les générateurs de la ville et comme tous les générateurs qui se respectent ils tombent en panne et vous êtes dans le noir.

I had hoped to have my flat at the end of last week but as i 3/4 expected it it is being delayed by a week, lets hope it is not going to be much more.

The only thing that will be causing me a problem in the flat is the ugly green color that is on the wall, so i shall take to the paint brush or hide it under some large piece of fabric....

Other than that I will have a balcony to take my meals on, the view is very limited but during hot periods it will be hidden from the sun, so that's ok with me. and to be able to have breakfast and my evening cuppa outside all through the year it is ok with me.
I am told i will even have the television, which is an essential element in egyptian life, i shall dutifully listen to it as to learn arabic.
on that line my progresses are very slow....but steady.

J'avais espèré avoir mon appart à la fin de la semaine dernière mais comme je m'y attendais aux 3/4 y a eu un leger retard, normalement c'est pour dans une semaine. enfin j'ose l'espèrer.

Le seul truc qui ne me convient pas dans cet appart st l'horrible couleur verte aux murs donc au choix soit je repeins soit je cache la misère avec de grands panneaux de tissus...

Autrement je vais avoir un balcon où je pourrais manger, la vue n'est pas des plus jolie mais pendant les périodes chaudes c'est à l'ombre, donc ça me va bien. être à même de prendre mon petit dej et ma tisane du soir dehors me va comme un gant.

Il paraît que je vais même avoir la télé, élément essentiel de la vie égyptienne, et je nme ferais un devoir de l'écouter religieusement pour progresser en arabe.
de ce côté là je progresse lentement mais surement...

yesterday Shalatine was on the map. So we left at 6 Am and headed south until the village.
First time for me to go so deep south, so the camel market, first we had to find it as in the village you have 3 markets, one for camel outside, one for everything and anything on the outskirt and one inside for food and household item, not IKEA but nearly... if you go onto the site www.info-marsaalam.com i loaded some pictures of the camels. if you want one as a pet, it will cost you 4000 egyptan pounds for a young one. do you want me to book one for you ?

hier direction SHALATINE au fond du fond du sud, une première pour moi. Donc le marché aux chameaux, d'abord il a fallut le trouver, vu qu'il y a 3 marchés dans un minuscule village . celui des chameaux est à l'exterieur, limite du village c'est le marché à tout et rien et dans le village c'est bouffe et maison, pas IKEA mais presque. Si vousallez sur le site www.info-marsaalam.com vous trouverez les photos que j'ai prise hier. Si vous voulez un petit chameau comme animal de compagnie, faut compter 4000 livres egyptiennes pour un jeune. je vous fais une résa....

Et me voilà seule au fin fond du monde, c’est toujours aussi bien, avec le soleil toute la journée et luxe suprême, tous les jours.
Arrivée au terminus le 10 Nov après quelques jours à Hurghada où j’ai consciencieusement éviter les quartiers touristiques pour me dégoter une petite terrasse bien sympathique pour siroter un citron pressé bien mérité, le tout à 9h du soir, j’avoue humblement j’aime bien.

Pour atteindre le bout du monde, j’ai pris un taxi collectif toute seule, le paradoxe est bien réel mais les taxis ont seulement le droit de circuler sur une zone limitée. Au delà de cette zone ce sont les taxis collectifs ou les bus et pour les européens il n’est pas possible de partager un taxi avec la population locale encore moins pour une femme seule. Mais à raison de 250 Livres égyptiennes (23 €) pour 250 km faut pas se plaindre, La voiture était bien tout comme le chauffeur (et non chauffard), à refaire si besoin est sans aucun problème.

Bientôt je vais tester le bus de Marsa Alam à Hurghada et puis sur Le Caire, là Mamie va y laisser des centimètres et ressembler à une naine à la sortie, le confort sera plus réduit et pendant 12 heures.

Sinon dans le sud nous avons une légère basse de température le soir due au vent mais on mange encore dehors avec sa laine mais dehors. La température de l’eau est seulement à 27 et comparé a cet été elle est froide mais j’ai bravé les éléments et je suis aller faire coucou aux poissons. Et ma récompense fut de pouvoir observer en palme masque tuba (PMT) un poisson

Here I am all alone in the middle of nowhere, what a great place to be, with the sun shinning all day and luxury every day.
I finally got here on nov 10th after a couple of days Hurghada. I avoided extremely well the tourist area as it is not my cup of tea and managed to find myself a small coffee shop with a terrace where I could sip my lemon drink in peace, outside at 9 pm, it is something I really enjoy.
To reach the back of the beyond I took a “collective taxi” all for myself. Yes I know, sounds strange but here taxis are only for local areas. If you want to got further a field it is the collective taxi or the bus and as far as Europeans are concerned it is not to be shared with the local population, moreover for a women alone. But 250 km for 250 Egyptian pounds (about 23 €) you cannot complain. And the car was fine, so was the driver, so to be done again if needed.
I will check soon the bus from Marsa Alam to Hurghada and on to Cairo. Less comfortable ride I imagine 12 hours in the bus….. Grand Ma will loose a couple of centimetres of her height, and end up looking like a dwarf

Down south in the evening we have a slightly lower temperature due to the light wind, but eating outside is still possible, ok with a sweater but nevertheless outdoors.
Well the water felt very cold when I went in yesterday, normal it is only 27° Celsius compared to 30° during the summer. So I braved the elements and went in.

And the reward was awaiting for me : I was snorkelling and I had the pleasure to observe a parrot fish rubbing his eye with its fin !!!! would not have thought this could exist.

Now for the second one, it is high time i go back as between the site and the blog i will run out of different pictures.

And this time i will attempt not to flood the camera......and i will check its waterproofing abilities in a bucket before diving....learned my lesson...or i hope i did anyway....

Voici la deuxième photo, il est grand temps que je reparte pour de nouvelles photos car entre le blog et le site je vais être un peu juste en nouveauté.

Et cette fois-ci je vais éviter de noyer l'appareil et je lui offrirai une petite plongée de vérification dans un seau ....j'espère avoir appris ma leçon...
